Common Water Quality Questions

Why is my water white, cloudy, or milky?

When water comes out of the faucet looking milky or cloudy, it's usually due to air being introduced into the water. This is not harmful.

How to check: Fill a glass with water and leave it for a few minutes. If the water clears from the bottom up, this is simply air-saturated water.

Solution: Ensure internal fixtures have clean and complete aerators attached. The aerator is the device at the end of the faucet that collects debris and breaks up air bubbles.

If the water does not clear, report it to BPUB by calling (956) 983-6100.

Where can I find water quality information?

The EPA requires community water systems to deliver a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), also known as an annual drinking water quality report, to customers each year by July 1.

The CCR provides information about your local drinking water quality and can help you make informed choices about the water you drink.

What causes low water pressure?

Low water pressure can result from:

  • Water main breaks in your area
  • High demand periods (hot summer mornings when many people irrigate)
  • Partially closed shutoff valves in your home
  • Clogged aerators or fixtures
  • Leaks in your plumbing system

If you experience persistent low pressure, contact BPUB at (956) 983-6100.

What should I do if I suspect a water main break?

If you notice water bubbling up from the ground, water flowing in the street, or a sudden loss of water pressure affecting multiple homes, report it immediately:

Do not attempt to repair or access any water infrastructure yourself.

Is discolored water safe?

Brown or yellow water is usually caused by sediment or minerals (like iron or manganese) in the water mains. While typically not harmful, discolored water may:

  • Stain laundry
  • Taste different
  • Indicate system maintenance is needed

What to do:

  1. Run cold water at the tap closest to your water meter for several minutes
  2. If discoloration persists, report it to BPUB
  3. Avoid washing white or light-colored laundry until water clears
