Water Outage Tips

What to do before, during, and after a water outage. Tips for protecting your home and family during water service disruptions.

During a Water Outage

  • Do not use hot water — sediment can be drawn into your water heater when pressure drops.
  • Use stored water for essential needs: drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
  • If you have a well or alternative water supply, do not connect it to the public water system.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and those with medical conditions that require water.

After Service is Restored

  • Run cold water for a few minutes to clear the lines before drinking.
  • Discolored water after restoration is usually harmless and will clear within a short time. If it persists for more than a few hours, call BPUB.
  • Check all faucets and toilets for running water — a valve may have shifted during the outage.
  • Flush your water heater if sediment has accumulated.

Boil Water Notices

  • Use bottled or boiled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth.
  • Discard any ice made during the notice period.
  • Run dishwashers on the sanitize cycle, or wash dishes with boiled water.
  • BPUB will notify customers when the boil water notice is lifted.
